Joel’s practice is primarily devoted to mediation and dispute resolution.  Joel has a 40+ year career litigating in state and federal courts around the state and the country, estimating he has tried approximately 50 jury trials over that time span, plus numerous bench trials.  His career experience most recently included eight years as Senior Counsel in the Office of General Counsel for the University of Missouri System, handling litigation matters and investigations for the University and its four campuses.  Prior to his time in the General Counsel’s Office, Joel was Chief Counsel of the Litigation Division in the Office of the Missouri Attorney General, where he led a team of 30+ attorneys, defending the State of Missouri and its elected officials and departments, state employees and the men and women of the St. Louis and Kansas City metropolitan police departments. The Litigation Division defended jury trials seeking money damages as well as lawsuits seeking declaratory and injunctive relief against the state.

Prior to his time with the Attorney General, Joel worked in private practice in Kansas City and then in St. Louis, when his firm chose him to open its St. Louis office.

For several years Joel has taught law students as an Adjunct Professor, teaching at 3 of the state’s law schools, generally in the area of trial advocacy and trial practice.

Most recently Joel completed the Mediation in Civil Litigation Training program offered by MU Law School.  This program was over three days, qualifying him to be listed as a Missouri Rule 17 Mediator.

He has also been recognized by his peers for his mentoring and leadership skills, earning Mentor of the Year from Missouri’s Lawyer’s Weekly in 2013 and being honored as a Legal ICON by the same group in 2024. In December of 2024, the Boone County Bar Association awarded him with its Professional of the Year award.
