Discrimination in Employment

State and federal laws prohibit employers from discriminating against current or prospective employees on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, disability, or age. Employment discrimination can take many forms, including termination, demotion, failure to hire, failure to promote, and creating a hostile work environment. Read more . . .

Discrimination at Educational Institutions

Federal law requires equal access to education regardless of sex. Under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Discrimination in Public Accommodations

Businesses that offer goods, services, shelter, recreation, or entertainment to the general public may not discriminate on the basis or race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, disability, or familial status. Public accommodations discrimination includes the refusal to serve or sell goods to persons in one ore more protected classes as well as the failure to provide parking, restrooms, or other reasonable accommodations to persons with disabilities. Discrimination in Housing

Both Missouri and federal law prohibit landlords and real estate brokers from refusing to rent or sell real property on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, disability, or familial status. For example, a landlord may not refuse an otherwise qualified tenant from renting an apartment because the prospective tenant is pregnant, has custody of minor children, or lives with extended family.
